This is better as you have a single subject, but I think the area of interest (headwear) is lost in the jumble of branches in the background.
I'm not sure how much control you had over the subjects, but it would've been good if you had them behind a clear sky.
It might be an idea to try punching the contrast with a strong s-curve, and masking in those 'headsticks' to make them more prominent.

These were all taken in a 2 min span, prior to the dancers' performance. I was lucky to even get behind the stage to shoot them. I'm not thrilled with the composition in this series, but the subjects were too interesting not to post.
